Conditions and restrictions for memorials
All fixings/removals to take place Monday - Friday between 09:00 - 16:00

The right of erecting any memorial, monument, gravestone, tablet or monumental inscription is limited to the period of years as specified on the Deed of Grant for the Exclusive Right of Burial issued to the applicant. Any permission given will be deemed to expire at the same time as the Exclusive Right of Burial will expire.
At the expiration of the Exclusive Right of Burial or any extension thereof the Council reserve the right to remove the memorial
All work connected with the installation, maintenance or removal of memorials and gravestones must be carried out by a memorial mason approved by Great Yarmouth Borough Council to the standard outlined in NAMM's Code of Working Practice. On all memorials erected and re-erected, the section and grave number must be etched/carved in the memorial base. The Memorial Mason's name or initials should also either be engraved or affixed securely to the memorial.
No memorial will be permitted to be erected on a common grave.
Before the erection of any memorial or gravestone, application must be made on the prescribed form, giving a drawing of the proposed memorial or gravestone and showing its dimensions, proposed inscription or details of works to be carried out. Application forms should be submitted to the Bereavement Services Manager for approval, prior to works being carried out
No memorials constructed of wood, glass, china or plastic material shall be placed on any grave apart from the temporary memorial supplied exclusively by the Council. The Council reserve the right to remove any such materials that do not conform to the Regulations currently in force.
All memorials are erected within the cemeteries at the owner's risk and the Council will not accept responsibility for any loss or damage whatsoever. Memorials should be kept in a good state of repair and if a memorial becomes neglected or dilapidated, we do not remove any memorials, we will either make safe or lie flat.
As from 1st January 2005 a ground anchoring system approved by Great Yarmouth Borough Council, as outlined in NAMM's Code of Working Practice, must be fitted to all new or replacement memorials, those removed for additional inscription, or removed for repair or cleaning that are over 15" in height. All memorials over 15" in height must be a minimum of 3" and maximum of 4" thick
As soon after an interment as is practical, the Council will re-turf or sow grass seed over the area of the grave, apart from the space forming the garden at the head of the grave, and it will be left in good repair.
The erection of fences, trellis, hedges and the planting of trees, shrubs and plants is strictly prohibited in Magdalen Lawn Cemetery
Additional Conditions and Restrictions applicable to Magdalen Lawn Cemetery and other lawn sections
On all installations the foundation base must be set into the soil so that its top surface is level with the soil surrounding
Memorials on Full Grave (9' x 4')
Sections must not exceed the following dimensions:
- Foundation base: 33" width, 16" depth and 2" thick
- Memorial base: 30" width, 15" depth and a minimum of 3" and maximum of 4" thick
- Memorial headstone: 31" high a minimum of 3" and maximum of 4" thick. Complete installation must not be higher than 34" when measured from the ground
Cremated Remains Sections (excluding flat stone area):
- Foundation base: 24" width, 16" depth, 2" thick
- Memorial base: 23" width, 15" depth, min 3", max 4" thick
- Memorial headstone: 31" high, thickness not to exceed 4" or less than 3". Complete installation to be not higher than 34" measured from the ground adjoining.
The following conditions apply to lawn areas in Gorleston Old Cemetery (Section R), Caister Borough Cemetery (Sections TT and VV) and to all areas of Magdalen Lawn Cemetery
- planting of any kind is strictly prohibited
- the use of chippings is prohibited
- the use of bricks or stone for edging is prohibited
- the Council reserves the right to remove any planting or materials which are either not maintained to an acceptable standard or where the conditions outlined above are disregarded
- the Council will accept no responsibility for damage to any planting which is undertaken, either as a result of legitimate maintenance operations or otherwise, and reserves the right to remove such planting where this hinders maintenance operations
Magdalen Cemetery Flat Stone Area
- Foundation base: 24" width, 16" depth, 2" thick
- Memorial base: 23" width, 15" depth, min 2", max 4" thick
- Memorial headstone: Min 2", max 4" thick. Complete installation to be not higher than 15" measured from the ground adjoining. No ground anchor is required for memorials with a height of 15" and under.
Section W Caister Borough (no kerb sets)
- Foundation base: 42" width, 16" depth, 2" thick
- Memorial base: 40" width, 15" depth, min 3", max 4" thick
- Memorial headstone: 36" width, min 3", max 4" thick. Complete installation to be not higher than 34" measured from the ground adjoining.
Within Section N Caister Borough, the complete installation to be no higher than 40" measured from the ground adjoining.
Kerb sets
Not permitted in Magdalen Lawn Cemetery, Gorleston Old Section R, Caister Borough Sections TT, VV and W).
Must be erected on a solid reinforced concrete landing of the dimensions 86" x 38", min 2.5" thick, double kerb sets 86" x 86" min 2.5" thick. All parts of the memorial must be contained within these dimensions.
